Expectations is a film that explores the ideas of what expectations the artist puts on herself based on who she is and the body she sits within.
Laura looks at this under the topics of; her good student body, feminine body, gay body and sexy body.
Through each of these a video plays of a person moving within a bedroom being filmed by a high angle camera in time-lapse while trying to fulfill the expectations of each role. Along with this video is an audio recording of many of the thoughts that go through the artist's head while feeling the push to do each of these perfectly.
As the film progresses the room changes with the influence of each expectation, finally finishing in a room that all of them had a hand in forming.
Laura Olive is a multidisciplinary artist currently studying Media Arts in her second year at Alberta University of The Arts. Although her practice is primarily focused in technology, she also enjoys producing traditional art such as sculpture, fibre and drawing. Her works primarily hinges on personal experience often talking about her body, her mental health, sexuality and the places those fit within the world. She tries to reinterpret these topics within a new lens, finding aesthetically pleasing or comedic ways to interpret often taboo and/or dark topics. Her goal is simply self-expression with the hope that others can find themselves within the art.
