Angela Lee's performance is inspired by a deaf artist named Christine Sun Kim. Sun Kim defines silence as a very obscure sound in which Lee relates to. As a quiet person herself, Lee feels that her voice is quiet enough to blend into the background.
The white thread against the white background represents Lee visualizing her definition on silence. As she sews the white thread onto the white fabric, she is making a small mark, and the different shapes the lines of the thread represents speech.
Angela, also known as Sunyoo, is a media arts student of AUArts who delves into creating meaningful pieces. Her
motivation is to embrace her culture and create pieces that exhibits a reflection of it. She is interested in talking and thinking about her heritage. She creates video art and sound art, but feels that she has such a love and passion for sound art specifically.
As a person of color living in Canada, Angela focuses her works on subjects such as biculturalism, and the feeling of in betweenness that comes with it. She considers herself a “collage artist”, because besides doing physical collages, she mixes different languages and cultures within her pieces. In this piece specifically, she takes a different approach to visualizing what silence is, and her personal connection with it.
